It was a typical Thursday morning when Tom walked into his classroom. He reached into his backpack to take out his homework, but it was gone! He had spent two hours working on it the night before.

"Where could it be?" Tom wondered. He checked every pocket of his bag. He looked under his desk. He even asked his classmates if they had accidentally taken it. Nobody had seen it.

The teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was not happy. "Tom, this is the third time this month that you haven't submitted your homework," she said with a disappointed expression.

"But I really did it this time!" Tom insisted. He felt frustrated because he was telling the truth.

During lunch break, Tom decided to investigate. He retraced his steps from the morning. First, he had walked from his house to the bus stop. Then he took the bus to school. Finally, he walked from the bus stop to the classroom.

Suddenly, he remembered something. On the bus, he had taken out his homework to review it one more time. Could he have left it on the bus?

After school, Tom went to the bus company's lost and found office. There, sitting on a shelf, was his homework! He was so relieved.

The next day, Tom showed his homework to Mrs. Johnson and explained what had happened. She smiled and said, "I'm glad you found it, Tom. But from now on, keep your homework safely in your bag!"
